The Disabled Citizens Society (Inc)

Dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities through meaningful work, life skills training, and lasting social connections.

About Us

The Disabled Citizens Society (Inc) is a non-profit organisation that provides support in many areas for those with, or looking after someone with disabilities. Life skills, a link to the community, supportive employment, social interaction and more. Many of our members have made life-long friends at the DCS, and the change that we see in the lives of others is what keeps the team at the DCS striving to do more.

Founded in 1943 to support wounded, rehabilitating soldiers, The DCS has helped thousands of people over the past 81 years in a variety of ways.

Retail Savvy Training Program & Qualification Pathway

Through our on-site Op Shop, eligible members can take part in our Retail Savvy training program—a 5 to 6-month journey designed to build practical retail skills and confidence in a supportive environment. Trainees commit to a minimum of 6 hours per week in-store across several days. Our experienced staff provide the tools, guidance, and encouragement needed to help each trainee succeed. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will receive a nationally recognised NZQA qualification relevant to the retail industry. Graduates of the initial program may have opportunities to continue along our qualification pathway, potentially working toward advanced qualifications in senior retail management or merchandising.

If you—or a member of your whānau—are interested in this program, we’d love to hear from you.

Where friendship, dignity, and practical support come together.

Make a real difference in the lives of people with disabilities. Through our supportive employment programmes and business collaborations, we help local companies achieve their goals while creating meaningful opportunities for our members.
